In 2024, the United States District Court for the Southern District of California, embarked on a
unique initiative to transform part of its space into a public art exhibit, fostering a deeper
connection between the judiciary and the community it serves. Completed in 2025, The
Courthouse Gallery reimagines the courthouse as a place of law and also a venue for cultural
engagement.

June 16, 2025 diverse perspectives and stories that shape the region. By opening the doors to art, the Court invites the public to experience justice and creativity in a new light, strengthening the bond between civic institutions and the people they represent. In keeping with these goals, The Courthouse Gallery presents its inaugural exhibit, "The Art of Freedom." The exhibit features two-dimensional, original painting and mixed media pieces on freedom: what it means, how it makes you feel, who or what makes you feel free, where you feel free, and why freedom is so important.
Artists from across the Southern District of California submitted figurative, abstract, and conceptual pieces, and were chosen based on how their work responded to the theme, the artist’s technique, skill, degree of difficulty, and mastery of materials.
Gallery Hours: The artists’ works are available to view 24 hours a day, 7 days a week in the unique gallery space located on the north side of the Schwartz Courthouse facing West Broadway.
